As a vibrant center of contemporary and historical art, Berlin is shaped by complex social forces. Germany’s history, both political, economic, and cultural encompasses the most horrific events of the 20th century, as well as some of the most progressive cultural workin the 20th and 21st century. In this range of forces are many lessons for artists making art in America right now.
Students prepared for their Berlin visit with ArtCenter classes on the historical background of Germany from 16th C. to current times with an emphasis on contextual and multi-cultural understanding, throughout the Spring term.
During the Spring / Summer break, they experienced the city firsthand, immersing themselves in its rich culture and complex histories, visiting galleries, museums, important historical sites as well as connecting with local artists through studio visits.
